description
Men Like That examines queer life in Mississippi from the 1945 to 1985 in two parts. Part 1 is based on oral histories with over thirty queer people, including gay men and trans women. Howard adeptly complicates established traditions in LGBTQ historiography, including the centrality of urban spaces and the idea that the conditions of queer life improved as time wore on. In contrast, Howard finds that 1940s Mississippi maintained a "quiet accommodation of difference" that transformed during the civil rights movement. Part 2 examines the representations of various scandals involving leaders and politicians and of white "dirty beatniks" during the freedom summer who, it was said, would be as likely to bed black men as black women. One of the few books on southern queer history, Men Like That deserves the widest possible readership.
